University of Virginia Student Health Insurance Program 2008-09

All students are required by the University to maintain health insurance as a condition of enrollment.

ATTENTION ALL INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS: You will be subject to a hard waiver program for the 2008-2009 academic year. For more information on this program, click here.

The University has renewed its contract with Aetna Student Health, formerly known as The Chickering Group, to administer the 2008-09 student health plan. All benefits will remain the same under the plan.  The annual premium will decrease by 7%.  See the chart and links below for premium and enrollment information.

-Premium rates are cumulative, e.g. student + spouse = $4,957;student + child= $4,531.

Students may enroll on-line. There is no monthly payment option for the student health plan. Domestic students may elect to pay their individual annual policy premiums upfront or semi-annually (two payments) or quarterly (4 payments) at no additional charge. International students may only elect the annual or Spring/Summer payment options.

The deadline for annual enrollment is October 3, 2008.  Students who miss the annual enrollment deadline will have an opportunity to join the plan.  When submitting a premium payment for a coverage period other than Annual, Spring/Summer, Summer or Quarterly (i.e. Optional Effective Date Coverage Period) please note, no pro-rated premium is available. Premium will be the same as indicated on the chart above depending on where your requested effective dates falls.  Coverage will begin on the day after the submitted on-line enrollment application or the day after the postmark date of a paper application.

Special Enrollment Periods

Aetna Student Health has also worked with the University to offer special enrollment periods for students who are starting at the University at different times:

• • December 1 - January 31, 2009: Open enrollment: newly entering spring semester students may purchase a partial year plan including spring/summer coverage and pay the full spring/summer premium. Coverage will be effective January 1 through August 14, 2009.

• • Summer Session Enrollment: Open enrollment: New students attending Summer Session may enroll for May, June, July, and August of the current plan year. Coverage will be effective from May 1 through August 14, 2009.

• • Early Start: Aetna Student Health will offer students whose programs have an official start date before August 15, 2008 the opportunity to purchase a policy with a small supplemental premium to cover the weeks before the regular start date in August.
