University of Virginia Student Health Insurance
Program 2009-10

All University of Virginia students are required to maintain health insurance as a condition of enrollment.

ATTENTION ALL INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS: You will be subject to a hard waiver program for the 2009-2010 academic year. Please click here.

The University has renewed its contract with Aetna Student Health, formerly known as The Chickering Group, to administer the 2009-10 student health plan. All benefits will remain the same under the plan.  The annual premium will decrease by 7%.  See the chart and links below for premium and enrollment information.

NOTES:  Premium rates are cumulative, e.g. student + spouse = $5,248; student + child= $4,797.

Students may enroll on-line. Domestic students may elect to pay their individual annual policy premiums upfront (one payment) or semi-annually (two payments) or quarterly (4 payments) at no additional charge. There is no monthly payment option.  International students may only elect the annual or Spring/Summer payment options.

The deadline for annual enrollment is October 2, 2009. 

Special Enrollment Periods
Aetna Student Health offers special enrollment periods for students who start at different times:

• • Spring/Summer Session Enrollment: New students entering for the spring semester may purchase a partial year plan for spring/summer coverage and pay the full spring/summer premium of $1,396. Coverage will be effective January 1 through August 14, 2010.

• • Summer Session Enrollment: New students attending Summer Session may enroll for May, June, July, and August of the current plan year and pay the full summer premium of $697. Coverage will be effective May 1 through August 14, 2010.

• • Early Start: Students enrolled in programs with early official start dates may pay a small supplemental premium (see chart below) to cover the weeks before August 15, 2009.  Early start coverage is available only to students enrolling in the annual plan.

Optional Effective Date Coverage:  Students who miss the annual or special enrollment deadlines will have an opportunity to join the plan; however, no pro-rated premium is available for this Optional Effective Date Coverage.  The premium will be the same premium as the Annual, Spring/Summer, Summer or Quarterly payment option depending upon when the requested effective dates falls.  Coverage will begin on the date after an on-line enrollment application is submitted or the date after a paper application is postmarked.
