Denied Waivers or Failure to Waive

Important Dates

July 17, 2017 Online site opens to students to enroll or waive.
August 15, 2017 Coverage begins for students enrolled in the Aetna Student Health Insurance plan.
September 18, 2017 Deadline by which students must enroll or waive coverage.
September 22, 2017 Deadline by which a student can appeal the decision if their waiver is denied.
September 29, 2017 UVa will post the Aetna Student Health Insurance plan annual premium of $2,690 to the SIS accounts of students who enrolled, failed to submit adequate documentation, or whose health plans were determined not to provide comparable coverage.
October 31, 2017 Deadline by which students must pay the annual premium for the Aetna Student Health Insurance plan.
August 14, 2018 Date that coverage ends for students enrolled in the Aetna Student Health Insurance plan.

Any student who fails to demonstrate comparable coverage in the online waiver site by September 18, 2017, will be automatically enrolled in the Aetna Student Health Insurance plan and responsible for the $2,690 premium. On September 29, 2017 UVA will post the Aetna Student Health Insurance plan annual premium of $2,690 to the SIS accounts of students who have not successfully waived coverage. Payment is due by October 31, 2017. A hold will be placed on the student’s account and they will be unable to register for the next semester of classes until the premium is paid. Once a student is enrolled in the Aetna Student Health Insurance plan, the coverage cannot be cancelled.

We strongly encourage students to determine if their insurance has comparable coverage and make an insurance decision as soon as possible. UVA will make every effort to enroll students in the Aetna Student Health Insurance plan as quickly as possible, but it typically takes 2-3 weeks from the appeal deadline before Aetna Student Health will receive an enrollment file from UVA. This processing time may necessitate students paying for prescriptions or medical services (such as immunizations, x-rays, and laboratory services) upfront until the enrollment in the Aetna Student Health Insurance plan has been completed. Once the enrollment in Aetna Student Health is complete, coverage will be retroactive to August 15, 2017.

Appealing Denied Waiver Applications

A student may appeal a waiver denial decision by contacting Student Health at hardwaiver@virginia.edu or at (434) 243-2702 on or before September 22, 2017. This deadline will be strictly enforced. Any appeal filed after September 22, 2017 will not be considered. If a student obtains new alternate health insurance coverage and wishes to submit a new waiver application, they must contact Student Health at hardwaiver@virginia.edu or at (434) 243-2702 on or before September 22, 2017 to receive further instructions.
