Enrolling in the Aetna Student Health Insurance Plan

Important Dates

November 20, 2017 Online site opens to students to enroll or waive.
January 1, 2018 Coverage begins for students enrolled in the spring Aetna Student Health Insurance plan.
February 5, 2018 Deadline by which students must enroll or waive coverage.
February 9, 2018 Deadline by which a student can appeal the decision if their waiver is denied.
February 26, 2018 UVa will post the Aetna Student Health Insurance plan annual premium of $1,666 to the SIS accounts of students who enrolled, failed to submit adequate documentation, or whose health plans were determined not to provide comparable coverage.
March 31, 2018 Deadline by which students must pay the spring premium for the Aetna Student Health Insurance plan.
August 14, 2018 Date that coverage ends for students enrolled in the Aetna Student Health Insurance plan.

The Aetna Student Health Insurance Plan spring premium is $1,666. The coverage dates are January 1, 2018 - August 14, 2018. To learn more information and to enroll, please visit: www.uvastudentinsurance.com.

We strongly encourage students to complete an enrollment application as soon as possible. Access the online enrollment site administered by Aetna Student Health at www.uvastudentinsurance.com and follow the instructions under the tab labeled “Enroll/Waive.” This will allow access to the Aetna Student Health Insurance plan.

Is there a special enrollment option if a student loses coverage during the academic year?

If you experience certain types of life changes — like losing health coverage or having a baby — you may qualify for a Special Enrollment to enroll in the Aetna Student Health plan for the rest of the plan year.

Changes that qualify for a Special Enrollment Period

You might qualify for a Special Enrollment Period if you or anyone in your household lost qualifying health coverage in the past 30 days OR expects to lose coverage in the next 30 days. Coverage losses that may qualify you for a Special Enrollment Period:

  • Losing job-based coverage
  • Losing COBRA coverage
  • Losing individual health coverage for a plan or policy you bought yourself
  • Losing eligibility for Medicaid or CHIP
  • Losing coverage through a family member
  • Had a baby or adopted a child

How to enroll in the Aetna Student Insurance plan for a life event change?

Please email hardwaiver@virginia.edu to request enrollment into the Aetna Student Health plan within 30 days of losing current insurance coverage. Student Health will calculate the premium and complete the enrollment application.

A prorated amount will be calculated and added to the student’s SIS account.

If adding a dependent to the health insurance plan, a paper application will need to be requested and submitted to Aetna Student Health within 30 days of the qualifying life event change with payment. Also, a letter of prior coverage will need to be obtained from current insurance plan and submitted with the application.

Billing and Payment

This charge will be viewable to students in the SIS Student Center and will be due by March 31, 2018. Like other charges on a student's SIS account, failure to pay the full cost of the Aetna Student Health Insurance plan premium will result in a registration block, which will prevent registration for the next semester of classes.

Cancelling the Plan

If you withdraw from school within the first 31 days of a coverage period, you will not be covered under the Policy and the full premium will be refunded, less any claims paid. If you withdraw from school for any reason other than joining the armed forces, Aetna won't refund your premium. Instead, you’ll continue to be insured until your coverage period runs out for which premium has been paid. You will be insured for the coverage period for which you are enrolled, and for which premium has been paid. Please refer to the Plan Design and Benefits Summary for more information regarding eligibility, coverage dates, premium rates and applicable deadlines.

Graduate Student Subsidy Program

Students who qualify for the health insurance subsidy must also comply with UVA's hard waiver program. To comply with the hard waiver program, students must enroll in the Aetna Student Health Insurance plan by accessing the online enrollment site at www.uvastudentinsurance.com, select the "Enroll/Waive" button and select the enrollment option for the "17/18 Annual Plan." The charge for the health insurance will appear on your SIS account; however, your graduate health subsidy award will offset this charge. If you plan to utilize the graduate health insurance subsidy, it is essential that you enroll no later than February 5, 2018.
