Client
Rights and Responsibilities
As
a client of LNEC, you have the right:
- to
confidentiality. LNEC will not release or discuss your documentation
with anyone unless you provide a written request.
- to
meet with LNEC staff to better understand how your documented disability
may affect your academic opportunities at U.Va. and, in accordance
with Section 504 and ADA, what reasonable accommodations may address
the impact of your disability.
- to
be informed about LNEC and other University services and how you
can access them.
- to
work with LNEC, faculty, and deans to determine what reasonable
accommodations are appropriate to insure equal access to educational
activities. These accommodations should neither compromise the academic
integrity of a course or the academic standards of the University,
nor impose an undue burden on the University.
- to
receive, within approximately ten days of request, memos to faculty
recommending approved course accommodations.
As
a client of LNEC, you have the responsibility:
- to
provide documentation of your disability that meets established
guidelines, including an assessment that provides an index of your
current functional limitations/needs for accommodations (for ADHD/LD,
this documentation generally needs to be no more than three years
old).
- to
keep LNEC informed of academic progress and problems.
- to
develop self-advocacy skills. You have the responsibility to participate
with LNEC, faculty, and deans in investigating how your disability
affects your learning process and educational opportunities, and
in determining how you may best compensate in order to meet the
same academic standards as any other University of Virginia student.
- to
request approved accommodations in a timely fashion, typically during
pre-registration or by the first day of class, and to deliver accommodation
memos and notetaking packets to faculty within the first three weeks
of the semester.
- to
follow procedures for receiving services and to notify LNEC if,
for a particular course, you wish to cancel an accommodation, especially
note-taking, individual tutoring, and taped readings.
- to
regularly check your email account for LNEC postings regarding services,
programs, and information LNEC may need to provide services.
