Welcome to the University of Virginia!
This guide provides useful information about the accommodations that various University of Virginia departments provide to individuals with disabilities.

Accommodation is your right - it is not a favor or an unreasonable expectation. If you encounter difficulties during your time at UVA, please contact Brad Holland, the University's Coordinator of Services for Students with Disabilities. He will try to assist you in arranging the appropriate accommodation to meet your needs. Mr. Holland is interested in any experiences, good or bad, that you have while at the University. He can be reached at (434) 924-7819 or (434) 982-HEAR (V/TTY).

We hope you find this guide helpful.

Automatic Doors
David Villiott, Facilities Management Project Manager, 982-5908
In the past few years, the University has installed new automatic doors in selected buildings around Grounds. All of these doors are activated by motion sensors, push plates, or floor mats. Location of the door dictates the type of activation device used.

Doors that are automatic will have the international wheelchair symbol on the door. The activation device is usually placed out of the general traffic flow so everyone does not activate the door. When sensors are used the international wheelchair symbol is painted on the ground near each door to tell users where the sensors will "sense" them and open the door.

If you have any problems or suggestions about these doors, contact Mr. David Villiott at 982-5908.

Fine Arts
Concerts
Old Cabell Hall
Ticket Office, 924-3984
The concert hall in Old Cabell Hall is wheelchair accessible. Accessible seating is located at mid-level. When purchasing tickets, specify how many companions you will have so that appropriate seating can be provided for them as well. Enter Old Cabell Hall by going through New Cabell. There is a ramp that connects the two buildings at the second floor (west side) of New Cabell Hall. An elevator in Old Cabell Hall provides service to most floors of this building, including the level that has wheelchair seating (the loge-level "6" on the elevator). After exiting the elevator, turn left and go through a couple of doors to reach the seating. The accessible restroom in Old Cabell Hall is located on the basement level. Parking is available behind the Amphitheater, on McCormick Road, or in the Parking Garage located on Emmet street. There is also a wheelchair accessible ramp outside Old Cabell Hall on the west end of the building, allowing handicapped access from the lawn to Old Cabell Hall.

University Hall
University Union, 924-3286
Mark Fletcher, Associate Director of Athletics and Director of Intramural Recreational Sports, 982-5022
University Union occasionally has concerts at University Hall. You can contact University Union for more information about tickets. Parking should be available on the North side of University Hall during the event. See the Athletics section for more information.

Movie Theaters
Cinematheque
924-7900
This movie theater is located in the basement of Newcomb Hall. The elevator to reach the movie theater is located by Pavilion XI on the first floor. This elevator only travels to the basement and first floor levels. The other elevator in Newcomb Hall can travel to all floors except the 5th floor and the basement. There are a few spaces off the right aisle where a seat has been removed. This will allow an individual in a wheelchair to sit with his/her companions. There is also space in a few locations for two or more wheelchair users to sit together.

Gilmer Hall
Many films are shown in the large auditorium on Friday and Saturday nights. The main entrance is fully accessible and it is fairly easy to sit with companions.

Wilson Hall
Wilson Hall has a large auditorium. The main entrance during these movies is on the third floor. Unfortunately this is the lower level of the auditorium and it is difficult to see the movie screen from this level. Therefore, inform an usher that you need to sit at the upper (4th level) and that someone needs to unlock the upper doors. This sounds complicated, but it is really not a problem and it gives wheelchair users and their companions a better view.

Museums
University of Virginia Art Museum
Bayly Building
924-3592
A person using a wheelchair must enter the Museum from the parking lot in the back, which has handicapped parking available. The rear door can be opened by stepping on or rolling over the automatic opener. The elevator is just inside the door and provides access to all floors of the museum without additional assistance. There is an accessible restroom in the museum.

Fayerweather Gallery
Sylvia Strawn, 924-6122
The basement level of Fayerweather Hall is wheelchair accessible. A person using a wheelchair may gain access to the gallery and sculpture studio. The bathrooms are also accessible. There is no parking near Fayerweather Hall. The closest spaces are by the Architecture School or the Bayly Art Museum. The accessible route to Fayerweather is via Rugby Road.

Theaters
Culbreth and Helms Box Office
924-3376
When making reservations or purchases, advise the theater of your specific disability so they can make suitable accommodations. The box office is accessible via the set of 5 doors (one of which is automatic) at the front of the drama building. Disability parking for the Culbreth and Helms Theaters is located by the meter spaces in front of the theater and along the "ring road" usually used for picking up tickets. The theaters rarely provide interpreters for their plays unless informed in a timely manner of a specific need for an interpreter.

Culbreth
Culbreth Theater sets aside six seats for use as disability seating. The designated seating permits a person using a wheelchair to sit beside his/her companions. Access to the Culbreth Theater itself may be obtained in two ways: wheelchair access to the Culbreth lobby and theater is through the set of double doors to the left at the front entrance of the building. The theater can also be entered using the box office entrance (the right set of doors). To enter the theater from the box office, use the hallway beside the theater, following the tiled floor. A side door provides access to the theater. Ushers will assist those in need of assistance. Free headsets are available to assist people with hearing impairments. Request them at the box office. Accessible restrooms are in the Culbreth lobby.

Helms
The Helms is the smaller theater within the drama building. To enter, use the box office entrance (right set of 5 doors). Seating in the Helms varies with the production. Wheelchair and companion seating is available for each performance. Headsets are not available; however, the theater itself is much smaller, thus persons who have hearing impairments may be able to hear the actors. Ask an usher to direct you to the restroom behind the Helms as steps block access from the Helms to the main entrance in the Culbreth lobby.

Aquatic and Fitness Center
Mark Fletcher, Associate Director of Athletics and Director of Intramural Recreational Sports, 924-3791
The Aquatic and Fitness Center, located at the intersection of Alderman Road and Whitehead Road, is fully wheelchair accessible.  The main floor of the Center may be accessed by using one of the two entrances.  One entrance faces Alderman Road.  The other entrance faces Whitehead Road and can be reached by using the diagonal sidewalk located on the corner of Whitehead and Alderman Roads.  The sidewalk has a slight incline.

There are accessible restrooms and water fountains on all three levels of the facility.  The main level of the Center includes a weight facility which consists of free weights, selectorize equipment, and cardiovascular equipment.  Also on the main level are the pool observation deck, a poolside cafe, and a book/sportswear store.  The elevator, located in the lobby of the main level, provides access to the upper and lower levels of the center.

The upper level consists of the main Intramural Sports Office and another weight facility.  This weight facility includes two exercise machines designed specifically for wheelchair users:  the Badger Advantage has four stations, and the Profit Machine allows a combination of recumbent and/or upper body exercise routines.

The lower level consists of the equipment issue desk, the women's locker room, the men's locker room and a unisex locker room (for families with children of mixed gender and for privacy for students with disabilities).  For access to the unisex locker room, specifically request access at the equipment issue desk.  In addition to lockers, the locker rooms have accessible water fountains, toilets, and showers.  Also located on the lower level are a courtesy phone, a 2000 square foot multipurpose room, a pool with a pool lift, a Jacuzzi, a coed sauna, and a 3-3 1/2 foot deep warming pool which is wheelchair accessible and is kept at 85 degrees.

Questions may be directed to the facilities supervisor on duty at all times.  Disability parking is located in the parking lot on Alderman Road nearest the Center's Alderman Road entrance.

Memorial Gymnasium
The Cage, 924-6204
The first floor and basement entrances have an intercom system. Press the button at the door which rings the staff office. Let the person responding know you need access to the building. They will activate the automatic door that will let you in. Disability parking for Mem Gym is located in the alley beside the building or in the parking garage on Emmet Street.

The basement of Mem Gym is accessible from a doorway on the Northeast corner, near the tennis courts. This entrance provides access to the weight room, pool, and locker rooms. The locker rooms have accessible toilets and showers. There is also a pool lift, accessible unisex restroom, and accessible drinking fountain in the area. The main floor of Mem Gym may be accessed by using the side doors facing Emmet Street. Parking
Parking and Transportation (P&T), 924-7231
Albert Whalley, Director, 924-7233

General Disability (Handicapped) Parking
General parking is available for anyone who has a disability license plate, sticker ID, or some other form of authorizing identification for their cars to indicate that they have a disability. The designated disability parking spaces are marked by signs that have the international wheelchair symbol. Additionally, those cars that have proper identification may be parked for free in meter areas.

Medical Center Parking
Parking for the medical center (including disability spaces) is located in the hospital parking garage. There is also parking on Hospital Drive behind the Clinical Office Building and the Medical School. This parking area is accessed via Jefferson Park Avenue at the intersection near Wilson Hall and Student Health. Both of these spaces are pay parking but patients park for free. There are some additional spaces at the side entrance to the Primary Care Clinic, in front of the Medical School, and at the front doors of the multi-story hospital.

Specific Disability Parking
A specific space may be reserved next to a particular building for a students or staff member with a disability. This space is reserved for that individual at all times and the individual is charged the standard rate for the pass. If you feel that the specific space is worth the additional cost, it may be a better option for you.

Temporary Disability Permits
Student Health, 924-5362
If you have a temporary mobility impairment and would like to use disability parking, you must go to Student Health and request written disability certification from them. Once you get the appropriate documentation from Student Health, present this information (along with your blue or orange parking permit) to P&T. They will give you a temporary permit for a space that is closest to the majority of your classes, if available. There may be a charge for this pass depending on the area.

Visitor Parking
Please see the Visitor section of this guide for information.

Melissa Oliver, 924-3095
Office of Equal Opportunity Programs (EOP) - 924-3095
David J. Koss, Assistant Director for Transit Operations - 924-0591

DART Ride Request Line, 982-0502 (Contract with Yellow Cab Company and coordinated through the Department of Parking and Transportation).

DART is a door-to-door transportation service. It is free to qualified students and employees with disabilities. The service is provided by Yellow Cab or JAUNT and runs when the University Transit System (UTS) main buses are in operation.

There are no restrictions on the number or type of trips that can be taken. Companions may ride with the person using the service. DART only operates in the area covered by the UTS route. Contact the Assistant to the ADA Coordinator (Melissa Oliver) or the LNEC for more information and to register for this service. Once approved for DART, participants should call Yellow Cab the morning service is needed to schedule rides. If using JAUNT (which uses wheelchair accessible vans with lifts) the user may call and schedule trips in advance for each week. DART participants may request a ride with less notice but it is best to schedule trips in advance if the time of service is known. Yellow Cab and JAUNT have different rules for scheduling rides depending upon the users' needs. The dispatchers will assist with this when calls are made by DART participants.

University Transit System (UTS)
924-7711
Currently, many regular bus routes are accessible to students with disabilities. The bus service has 26 transits in its fleet with 20 transits having wheelchair lift capability. This will improve to 23 with the purchase of new buses in July 2003. The goal is to have all transit buses equipped with handicap accessible lifts on all routes over time.

Escort Service
242-1122
The Escort Service is sponsored by the UVA Policy and Student Council. It operates from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., 7 days a week. One van runs from Clemons Library to the Dorm areas. It runs approximately once per hour. The second van is available by phone and will pick up and deliver students within a one mile radius of the Grounds. The wait time for this van depends upon the usage. Neither van is wheelchair lift-equipped.

Jefferson Area United Transit (JAUNT)
Donna Shaunesey, 296-6174
JAUNT provides transportation services for people with disabilities around the Charlottesville area. A UVA student may obtain the services of JAUNT by contacting the LNEC. After initial contact is made with the LNEC, the student should call JAUNT directly. To use JAUNT, call a day in advance to request the service. JAUNT is not available for local UVA travel. Use DART to travel around Grounds.

Charlottesville Transit System (CTS)
296-RIDE or 970-3840
CTS supplies fixed route bus service to Charlottesville and some portions of Albemarle County. The bus system operates Monday through Saturday. All routes run to 7 p.m. and 5 night routes operate until 11:50 p.m.

Regular fare to ride CTS is 75 cents. However, UVa students may ride free with a transfer issued by UTS. In addition, a free trolley route operates between Downtown and the University.

All CTS buses are wheelchair accessible. Buses are also equipped with bicycle racks
