SLI Application Instructions

The Summer Language Institute serves a broad range of students from all over the United States.  In addition to undergraduate and graduate students, enrollment is open to advanced high school students and individuals interested in learning a new language.

The Summer Language Institute Applications are in Adobe.pdf format and may be completed on-line.  Complete only the application that best describes your student status.

Application Deadline APRIL 8

Applicants are admitted on a rolling basis.Admissions decisions are made on the basis of academic qualifications and availability of space. Please note that applications will not be reviewed until they are complete (see the list of required application materials below).Applications submitted after the April 8 deadline will be considered as space allows.  Once a program fills, your application will be placed on a wait-list or considered for admission to another language program if desired.Class size is typically capped at 20 students.Apply early to guarantee a spot.

You will be notified by email when your application materials have been received.Notification of admission and other relevant information will also be communicated via email.

Application Materials Required of all Post-Secondary SLI Applicants

(High School Students should see separate instructions below).

  1. Application:

    Complete the online Summer Language Institute Application. Be sure to click the “email” button on the last page to send it to our office for processing.
  2. Transcript:

    If you are a currently enrolled UVA student, we can pull your transcript in our office.All other students must submit an official transcript from the last post-secondary institution attended.If possible, please have your transcript mailed to you first, and then email it as a scanned attachment to uvasli@virginia.edu.We will also accept mailed transcripts, either sent by you or your university registrar’s office.
  3. Recommendation Letter:

    All applicants must submit one letter of recommendation.It is preferable but not necessary to have a language instructor with whom you have studied the target language (in the case of Arabic and Chinese Level 2) or other language (in the case of all other programs) write your letter of recommendation. When this is not possible, the letter should be written by a non-language instructor or academic advisor.Non-students may request a letter from a work supervisor or colleague.We do not require a specific recommendation form.You should ask your recommender to assess your ability to succeed in an academically rigorous and accelerated summer language program.Application letters can be emailed by the recommender as an attached file to uvasli@virginia.edu.We will also accept letters sent by physical mail.
  4. Application for Permission to Enroll for Visiting Students:

    If any the following apply to you, you will be required to fill out an Application for Permission to Enroll for Visiting Studentsin addition to the general SLI application.A link to the permission to enroll form will be sent via email upon your acceptance into the Summer Language Institute.
    • You were not enrolled in a full time UVa degree program during the Spring 2011 semester
    • You are receiving a degree from UVa in May 2011
    • You are returning to from a Leave of Absence or Study Abroad Program
    • You are a student in UVa’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies (Community Scholar)
    • Your home institution is not UVa

Instructions for completing the University of Virginia Summer Language Institute Application High School Students

High school students require information that differs from the general Summer Language Institute application.The following materials must be submitted by high school students to be considered for admission to the SLI:

  1. Application:

    Complete the online SLI Application for Admission.  Be sure to click the “email” button on the last page to send it to our office for processing.
  2. Transcript:

    You must submit an official transcript from your current high school.If possible, please have transcripts mailed to you, and then scan and email as an attachment to uvasli@virginia.edu.We will also accept mailed transcripts, either sent by you or your high school.
  3. Medical Consent Form for Minors:

    To be completed by your parent/guardian.
  4. Terms of Understanding:

    To be signed by your parent/guardian and you.
  5. Secondary School Report:

    To be completed by the school counselor or principal.
  6. Letter of Recommendation:

    There is no set form for the recommendation letter.The letter should be written by an instructor or academic advisor and should assess your ability to succeed in an academically rigorous and accelerated summer language program.
  7. Application for Permission to Enroll for Visiting Students:

    High School Students will be required to fill out an Application for Permission to Enroll for Visiting Students.A link to this form will be sent via email once you are accepted into the Summer Language Institute.

Please note: The University does not offer housing for high school students. Living arrangements are the responsibility of the parent or guardian and must be in place before the student arrives for summer.
Where does this belong?

Provision of your birth date provides you access to the University’s electronic resources and is necessary for the University to comply with section 23-22:1 of the Virginia Code, reporting of information to the Virginia State Police for comparison with state and federal sex offender registries. 9/08
