French
The UVA French Department is pleased to announce its Summer Language Institute. Learn 4 semesters of French in a 9 (neuf) week intensive experience. Discover how fun and exciting it can be to learn a language!
Live French, Hear French, Speak French!
You'll acquire language competence in the fastest and most effective way, and in only 9 weeks (June 13 - August 6) you will earn 12 credits (FREN 1010, 1020, 2010, & 2020) and satisfy the UVa langugae requirement.
In our high-tech, ever-shrinking world, the knowledge and skills that come from learning a foreign language are invaluable. The ability to speak French could help you land that great job you've always wanted and take you places you've always dreamed of.
Summer will be here before you know it.
Where will you be?
For more information, visit the website for UVA's French Department and read Professor Cheryl Krueger's essay on learning languages.
Attendance in all three sessions (morning, afternoon, and evening) is required of all students, regardless of whether they are enrolled for credit or non-credit. Furthermore, every student, regardless of type of enrollment, must earn a passing grade in each class of the first half of the SLI in order to participate in the second half of the program.
A special track has been created in the French SLI to meet the needs of graduate students who intend to take a reading exam in French. In place of the regular afternoon session, students interested in acquiring a reading understanding of French have the option of taking a reading and translation course. The course will prepare students to read and translate French texts with the aid of dictionaries and grammar resources. Students who take this reading and translation class will attend the morning and evening sessions as usual. This course may not be used toward fulfillment of the undergraduate language requirement.
Student Comments:
- “SLI is a strong and very efficient language acquisition program that I would strongly recommend to everyone.”
- “The strength of the program is the professors. They were incredible.”
- “Extremely good staff who make learning an entire language in 9 intense weeks actually fun.”
