Italian Program Photos Grasp the language of the world's best artists. Comprehend the world's most beautiful poetry. Understand the recipes of the world's best food. Learn Italian! And fulfill your foreign language requirement in only 9 weeks.

The University of Virginia will offer an intensive program in Italian during the Summer of 2008. You will earn 12 credits by taking the equivalent of four semesters of Italian: ITAL 101, 102, 201, and 202. Speaking, reading, and writing skills will be emphasized, as well as all aspects of grammar.

Students will have seven and a half hours of instruction each day: the morning session (9-12) will cover the grammar while the afternoon session (1-4) will be devoted to conversations and skill practice. Students will also participate in cultural and more interactive activities in the evening session (6-7:30).

Attendance in all three sessions (morning, afternoon, and evening) is required of all students, regardless of whether they are enrolled for credit, non-credit, or audit. Furthermore, every student, regardless of type of enrollment, must earn a passing grade in each class of the first half of the SLI in order to participate in the second half of the program.

Student Comments:

  • “This program is great. I really loved doing it. I dreaded it at first because of the time commitment and stress load, but the professors made it fun with different trips, activities, dinners and games.”
