Students who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents are subject to U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) regulations. The University's International Student and Scholar Programs Office administers the F-1 and J-1 student programs for all University schools. Any questions regarding visa status must be directed to that staff. The F-1 and J-1 student visa documents (I-20 and IAP 66) are not issued for students attending summer session only. Students admitted to University degree programs may attend summer school prior to enrolling in the fall semester. Admitted students considering summer enrollment should call the International Student and Scholar Programs Office at (804) 982-3010, to discuss early issuance of the I-20. Students on the F-1 visa from another institution may attend summer school without changing their visa sponsor as long as they intend to enroll in the first institution again in the fall semester. Students on the J-1 visa must consult with the Exchange Visitor Program Officer of their first institution regarding any plans to study at another institution. Individuals holding the B-1 or the B-2 (tourist) visa status or those who enter the U.S. on the "visa waiver program" may study part-time as long as they maintain the validity of their I-94 Departure Record.
English is the language of instruction for all courses at the University of Virginia (exceptions include certain foreign language courses).
The University requires that students submit a current TOEFL score of at least 600 (250 computer based score TOEFL) for permission to enroll. The TOEFL exam is administered around the world. For more information, contact: TOEFL, Box 6154, Princeton, NJ 08541-6154, U.S.A. or the U.S.I.S. library at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate nearest you.
Admission to the Summer Session does not constitute admission to the University, nor does it allow students to register for the subsequent fall and spring semesters.
