king lear in every way
![]() |
William Shakespeare’s play King Lear, first performed on the London stage in around 1606, stands as one of the greatest achievements of English-language drama. In these two weeks, we will examine Shakespeare’s play and the currents it followed and then traced in our culture intensively. We will read Shakespeare’s play and some of its sources. We will examine critical issues such as the question of the evolution and interpretation of the text. We will also read and view later versions of the story, including Edward Bond’s play Lear (1971), Jane Smiley’s novel A Thousand Acres (1991), and Akira Kurosawa’s film Ran (1985).
