Summer Language Courses: Intensive but Flexible
Intensive 4-week courses are offered in a range of levels in French, German, Spanish and Swahili. These courses meet only in the mornings and give students the flexibility to take other summer session courses or pursue other goals in the afternoon.
The SLI: An Epic 8-Week Journey.
The SLI builds language skills and cultural awareness for students with little or no previous knowledge of the target language. In accordance with the SLI’s Rapid Language Acquisition model (known as 8+12+2), most of our SLI programs cover the equivalent of 2 academic years of language study and satisfy the language requirement at UVa. The exception is Arabic and Chinese SLI, which cover the equivalent of one year--elementary or intermediate--during the 8-week session. This is extreme language learning at its most intensive. Students attend language classes morning, afternoon and evening and participate in an array of meaningful co-curricular activities outside the classroom. It requires an absolute commitment, and the rewards are rich.
