WELCOME TO THE CENTER OF EXPERTISE FOR SUPERFUND SITE RECYCLING! In 2001, the University of Virginia entered into a cooperative agreement with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and opened a new multi-disciplinary Center of Expertise for Superfund Site Recycling. Superfund sites are areas identified by EPA's Superfund program as being impaired by hazardous substances. More than 1,200 such sites around the country are listed by EPA as priorities for investigation and cleanup. The Center will undertake investigations in support of the redevelopment of Superfund sites for a range of beneficial uses. Our goal is to explore the relationship between site characterization and risk assessment, risk management, and private and public sector economics and decision-making in order to better predict the types of redevelopment that may be feasible and desirable under different conditions, and to facilitate that redevelopment. |
