The University is grateful for the many ways its benefactors support the institution. The Cornerstone Society was created to show the University's appreciation for donors who accomplished their philanthropy through planned gifts.
On October 6, 1817, President James Monroe joined former presidents James Madison and Thomas Jefferson to lay the cornerstone of the University's first building, Pavilion VII. Likewise, the Cornerstone Society is laying the groundwork for the University's future. Member gifts may be for any amount and directed to any school, program, or University-related foundation. They may be designated for specific purposes, such as scholarships, fellowships, or faculty chairs, or they may be left unrestricted to help the University to address needs that cannot be foreseen today.
