Now more than ever, the University relies on the charitable contributions of alumni, parents, and friends to sustain its programs. Donors provide annual gifts that fuel day-to-day operations, endowment gifts that generate funds in perpetuity, capital gifts for new and renovated facilities, and planned gifts for the future benefit of students and faculty. Each type of gift helps to secure the University's place among the nation's finest institutions of its kind.
Jefferson envisioned the ideal academic community as an ensemble of faculty residences and student rooms placed around an open square of grass and trees. He fulfilled this vision when he created the Lawn, a setting of uncommon serenity and beauty and one of the nation's most revered architectural achievements.
The Lawn Society, which takes its name from this treasured site, honors alumni and friends who have made cumulative gifts of $100,000 or more. Their generosity is evident throughout the University. They have endowed professorships, scholarships, fellowships, and lectureships. They have enhanced the University's library and museum collections. They have financed construction and renovation projects. Furthermore, they have provided unrestricted funds that can be used to meet unexpected needs today and in the future.
