Why
should I make a reunion gift?
Reunion giving makes a strong statement about your commitment
to U.Va. For some alumni who have never given to the University,
reunion giving is a time to step forward and make a first-time
gift. For others who are regular contributors, it's often
a time for an increased commitment.
Why does the University need my support?
State tax dollars now provide less than 9 percent of the
University's revenues. This means that gifts from alumni are
more vital than ever. Your support will sustain excellence
in teaching, scholarship, and athletics programs at Virginia,
and it will preserve the quality of a student experience without
equal in higher education. More about state
budget cuts and their impact on U.Va.
Does reunion giving affect U.Va.'s rankings?
Yes. In U.S. News & World Report's annual assessment
of colleges and universities, the percentage of alumni who
give is a significant factor in alumni satisfaction, which
figures into the overall rankings. By taking part in reunion
giving, you help to deliver the message that you value what
the University has contributed to your life and that you are
willing to invest in its continued success.
What areas can I support with my reunion gift?
You may direct your reunion giving to the school or program
of your choice, or you may support several areas.
Will I receive credit for my employer's matching contributions?
Yes. Corporate matching gifts will be credited to you and
the class. Contact your human resources office for details
on your company's program. More about matching
gifts.
What types of gifts qualify?
You can participate in reunion giving through
- Annual Giving. Whether $25 or $25,000, the unrestricted
gifts alumni provide year to year help to fuel University
operations. Annual gifts go directly toward the University's
bottom line and will help to offset recent cuts in state support.
More about annual gifts.
- Capital or Endowment Pledges and Gifts. These are
usually large commitments for specific projects or programs.
Alumni often fulfill such commitments over several years.
All pledge payments received during our reunion year are credited
to the class for alumni participation and class giving totals.
More about capital projects.
- Planned Giving. Gifts for the future benefit of the
University, such as charitable trusts, may be eligible for
inclusion in the class giving totals. More about planned
gifts.
What
is the last day I can make a reunion gift this year?
Any gift made between July 1 and June 30 will
be counted in reunion giving totals for your class.
What
methods of payment can I use?
Checks, credit cards, electronic gift transfers, and appreciated
securities are all accepted. Go to U.Va.'s online
giving form.
How
will my class gifts be recognized?
During Reunions Weekend in June, your class's level of participation
in reunion giving will be announced in a ceremony on the Lawn.
Among the returning classes, the one with the largest percentage
of alumni taking part in reunion giving will be honored with
a loving cup trophy. (To ensure that your gift is included
in the ceremonial check your class presents to President Casteen,
please make your gift before May 15.) In addition, you
will be recognized in a special newsletter reporting the highlights
