What does MY-D-CAV mean?
MY-D-CAV stands for "My Yearly Dollars Count At Virginia."

Who are MY-D-CAVs?
MY-D-CAVs are young alumni and fourth-year students who support the University through annual gifts.

Why does the University need annual giving?
Annual giving from alumni and other donors helps to finance academic programs in the ten schools, as well as student-life activities, athletics, the library, and other programs. Annual gifts provide funding for such areas as the Alumni Association and preservation of U.Va.'s historic buildings and grounds.

Can I choose where to direct my gift to the University?
Yes, you can support any area of the University you are passionate about. For some examples of schools and programs you can support with annual contributions, click here

How are my contributions used?
Annual funds have been used to support schools, projects, teaching, research, and outreach. Here are some recent examples of how annual gifts are used.

I can only make a small contribution. Does that really help?
Absolutely. For example, if 40 alumni each gave $25, that would cover a student's annual costs of books and supplies. For more examples, read The Power of Numbers. For MY-D-CAVs, it is not how much you give, but that you give. Alumni participation, especially loyal participation from year to year, not only aids the University financially, but also factors into U.Va.’s ranking.

I've already paid my Alumni Association dues. Does that make me a MY-D-CAV?
No. Membership dues for the Alumni Association (or the University of Virginia Art Museum) are not contributions to U.Va.'s annual fund, and therefore do not receive MY-D-CAV recognition. Being a MY-D-CAV is about supporting the schools and programs that you care about most at U.Va. If you are interested in becoming a MY-D-CAV, you can make an annual contribution along with your membership to support the Alumni Association or the University of Virginia Art Museum.

Will my MY-D-CAV gift count toward my reunion class gift?
Yes. All MY-D-CAV gifts are included in your class year gift totals.

What are Recognition Societies?
In recognition of their generous contributions, donors are accorded membership in three benefactor societies. Many donors choose to belong to all three. They are the Rotunda Society, for $2,500 or more in annual giving, the Lawn Society, for cumulative gifts of $100,000 or more, and the Cornerstone Society, for bequests or other planned gifts.

The Rotunda Society has a special recognition level specifically for young alumni. The Portico Level recognizes recent graduates (those who completed their degrees within the last five years) who make annual contributions totaling $1,000 or more. Matching gifts count towards Rotunda Society gift totals.

What is a matching gift?
Many companies encourage their employees to make charitable contributions by matching their philanthropic support. At the University, donors receive credit for their employers' matching gifts, meaning the match will also count towards your gift totals. The impact of corporate matching support can be enormous. Hundreds of companies have matching-gift programs. To find out if you work for one of them, use this online search or consult your human resources office, which will also provide you with a matching gift form.

What is the University’s fiscal year? How does that affect my gift?
U.Va.’s fiscal year runs from July 1 to June 30. Giving numbers and participation data are calculated based on gifts processed between those dates. Multiple contributions for Recognition Societies must be made within the same fiscal year, not calendar year.

How can I make a contribution? Is there an easy way to give?
There are many options available for making gifts, and we have worked to make sure each one is easy and convenient. You can mail a check, give online, or even have a regular deduction made from your account through an Automatic Bank Draft. You could sign up to have $10 a month deducted for 12 months from your checking account, and after 12 months you’ve contributed $120 to the University!

Is my gift tax deductible?
Yes, the University of Virginia is qualified as a tax-exempted organization under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS Code, so all gifts to the University are tax deductible. To find out more about tax deductibility, click here.
