To illustrate how individual actions can make a positive difference, U.Va. recently launched a Sustainability Pledge. Designed for U.Va. students and employees, the pledge reads simply, “I pledge to consider the social, economic and environmental impacts of my habits and to explore ways to foster a sustainable environment during my time here at U.Va. and beyond.”
The pledge reflects the work of the Community Outreach and Communications Subcommittee of the President’s Committee on Sustainability. The pledge was created to address comments subcommittee members collected such as “My roommate doesn’t recycle – why should I?” and “I’m just one person; my actions don’t matter.”
Because such comments were expressed frequently in units across Grounds, the pledge was created to encourage students and employees to make daily decisions that can help the environment. The pledge idea, which was endorsed by the President’s Committee on Sustainability, was launched in 2010.
