Sustainability Speakers List

Curious about sustainability? Interested in making your work place or home more environmentally friendly? Want to reduce your impact on the environment but don’t know where to begin? The Sustainability Speakers List can help!

The list provides the names of individuals from U.Va. and the surrounding community who are willing to volunteer their time to meet with departments or groups to talk about sustainability and environmentally related topics. Speaker expertise ranges from energy conservation and alternative transportation, to sustainable food systems and urban stormwater management.

CAVPOOL: U.Va's Carpool Incentives Program

Recently, the cost of commuting to work has become a cause for great concern to many in the University community. This, in addition to concerns about the environmental impact of single occupancy vehicle commuting, has led many of us to consider our transportation options more carefully. For those who live on a Charlottesville Transit Service (CTS) or University Transit Service (UTS) bus line, there is already a no-cost option for commuting to work. The University pays a subsidy to the City of Charlottesville to allow its faculty, staff, and students to ride CTS buses at no charge, simply by showing a University ID. As always, UTS does not charge a fare. With the University's new GPS (Global Positioning System) installed on University and city buses you may easily monitor the estimated arrival time for the next bus. For those who are not served by these transit options, the Department of Parking & Transportation (P&T) is pleased to announce new incentives to encourage and support employees who carpool or vanpool. Offered through P&T's Transportation Demand Management program, this new package is called "CavPool". CavPool incentives include reduced permit rates, access to free occasional parking permits, a free guaranteed ride home when needed, and preferred parking assignments.

Office Clean-outs

Contact Facilities Management (434-982-5050) giving them as much notice as possible when you plan to purge old records or a large amount of other paper items. They will make arrangements as best we can to fit your needs and our schedule.

Sofa Shuffle

The University of Virginia's annual Sofa Shuffle sets up drop off spots for students and community members to unload any furniture, appliances or clothes they no longer want. All the items will then be donated to the Salvation Army and Habitat Store. In the 2009 Sofa Shuffle, approximately 300 significant household items were collected.

The R.O.S.E. Program

Like free stuff? The R.O.S.E. (Reusable Office Supply Exchange) Program takes in surplus office supplies and makes them available to students, faculty, staff, and student organizations at no charge. We have envelopes, binders, hanging folders, desk organizers, and much more.

If there is something you need, or excess items you wish to share, please contact us by phone, (434) 982-5050, e-mail recycle@virginia.edu or simply stop by UVA Recycling at the end of Leake Drive. Feel free to come browse!

Chuck It For Charity

Do you have reusable items that you would like to donate? At the end of each semester during exams we collect items for charity. What you no longer want, such a fan, electronics, furniture, microwave, clothes, and non-perishable food items, can be used by someone less privileged in the Charlottesville community.

The MERCI Program (Medical Equipment Recovery of Clean Inventory)

This program, which operates out of U.Va.’s Health Sciences Center, collects clean, unused medical supplies and outdated equipment that can still be used in other areas. The supplies are then shipped throughout the world. Since the program’s inception in 1992, we have collected and distributed much-needed medical supplies to Russia, Lithuania, Haiti, Honduras, and the local Free Clinic in Charlottesville.
