Sustainability Partners Help Green U.Va.
The mission of Sustainability Partners is to actively engage U.Va. employees in cultivating a community that embraces sustainable stewardship and practices. Sustainability Partners advocate and promote initiatives that reduce energy and water use, minimize waste, promote community, and enhance well-being.
Through monthly meetings and collaborative efforts, Sustainability Partners research innovative practices and develop strategies for creating a more sustainable workplace and community.
Through Sustainability Partners employees have helped shape:
- Reminder signs, such as “Try Just One” and “Flip the Switch.”
- Development and promotion of U.Va. Sustainability Pledge.
- Creation of an online training program, Sustainability at U.Va.: You Can Make a Positive Difference, offered through Human Resources. Note: the link will direct you to the integrated system login page. Once logged in, you will see the option to enroll in the course (class #146816).
2013-14 Theme: The Green Workplace Challenge
Sustainability Partners is adopting a theme this year to help guide and inspire a more sustainable U.Va. Our theme, The Green Workplace Challenge, reflects a new Green Workplace Program that is currently being piloted and will be rolled out to the university community in the next year. The program targets seven general areas: energy, transportation, purchasing, zero waste, community, food, and health.
Sustainability Partners, in an effort to show that individual action and innovation can make a positive difference at U.Va., is taking on the Green Workplace Challenge over the next seven months. Each month, Sustainability Partners will focus on one of the seven targeted areas as inspiration for action in our workplaces and discussion in our monthly meetings. During the month, we will consider adopting one individual action that can help green our workplace. Then, at our monthly meeting, we will debrief about our experiences – what were our successes, our challenges, our thoughts. We will also invite an expert in the field to discuss the topic of the month, to answer questions, and to help us realize other ways we can green our workplaces. We will then share our ideas and suggestions with the Committee on Sustainability as they continue to develop the Green Workplace Program.
Monthly Meeting Times, Topics & Guest Speakers
Please join us at our monthly meetings (you can just show up – no notice is required) and take the Green Workplace Challenge with us. Let’s work together to create a more sustainable U.Va. Even if you can’t make the meetings, join us in making the commitment to do just one thing each month to help green your workplace. And then share your experiences at our monthly meetings or via email.
Brown bag lunch meetings are held from noon to 1 p.m. on the third Wednesday of every month unless otherwise noted.
