Transportation
The University of Virginia's Parking and Transportation Department has established a Transportation Demand Management system, which is designed to reduce or redistribute automobile travel demand. This system encourages the use of public transportation. Among the initiatives implemented as part of the TDM system are:
- A reciprocity program between the University and the City allows all students, staff, and faculty to ride CTS buses for free, simply by showing their U.Va. ID. The reciprocity program also allows city residents, and everyone else, to ride UTS buses free of charge.
- Ninety-five percent of undergraduate students live within the area of fare-free university transportation service.
- A new incentive program, CavPool, provides favorable parking rates and proximity for carpoolers.
- Bicycle racks are being installed on University Transit System buses and within the new 11th Street garage.
- A car-sharing service is being established on Grounds.
- Installing a Global Positioning System (GPS) bus locator system.
In addition, the Parking and Transportation Services uses 20 percent biodiesel fuel in its bus fleet. Parking and Transportation has also taken major steps to improve the storm water discharged from the vehicle/bus maintenance facility.
- The Grounds Improvement Fund assists in funding pedestrian, bicycle, and landscape improvements to support multi-modal usage of the Grounds.
- The University has updated its Bicycle Master Plan and has developed a Bike Smart Map.(PDF)
