“It’s the Calories, Not the Carbs”
U.Va.’s Glenn Gaesser Debunks Myths About Dieting; New Book Sets Record Straight on Healthy Eating

IT’S THAT TIME of year again. Thousands of Americans have started off the new year with the resolution to lose weight. So, which diet will it be this year? Low carb, no carb, protein, liquid — a seemingly never-ending cycle. And why, with so many new fad diet books rolling off of store shelves, do Americans’ waistlines continue to expand? No matter how you slice it, it’s the calories that count, explains Glenn Gaesser, a U.Va. professor of exercise physiology, in his new book, “It’s the Calories, Not the Carbs.” Full story.

“Shades of Black”

Aboriginal Art Collection Connects Artists, Communities

One doesn’t have to travel to Australia to view spectacular Aboriginal art. The largest collection of Aboriginal art in the world, outside of Australia, exists right here in Charlottesville. A strong presence in the U.Va. community, U.Va.’s Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection is also gaining national and international attention. Through paintings, artifacts and exhibits, the collection has sparked an interest in Aboriginal art and cultures among the American public. One such exhibit is “Shades of Black,” works by indigenous Australian photographer Wayne Quilliam, which is on display through Jan. 29. Full story.
