Roger Conner  

ROGER L. CONNER had a vision of what U.Va.’s Medical Center grounds should be: an inviting and comforting zone for patients that epitomizes U.Va.’s prestigious hospital and School of Medicine. Conner, the buildings and grounds supervisor for the Health System landscape and labor crews, put his green thumb and imagination to work to transform the grounds into a meticulous garden of splendor. For their beautification efforts, Conner and his crew came out smelling like a rose, this year winning the top national prize in their field, along with earning local recognition. Full story.

Environmental Leader Gerald McCarthy Wins Recognition With Award

A strong advocate of protecting Virginia’s environment and resolving environmental conflict, Gerald McCarthy’s invaluable contributions are making University history. In honor of the executive director of the Virginia Environmental Endowment, U.Va.’s Institute for Environmental Negotiation has established the Gerald P. McCarthy Award for Leadership in Environmental Conflict Resolution. Full story.

Mastering the Art and Science of Marketing

shopperMany of Carrie Heilman’s research ideas come to her while shopping. “The problems that people work on in marketing are ones that most people can relate to in their everyday experiences,” said Heilman, an assistant professor in U.Va.’s McIntire School of Commerce. Her research approach: one that is analytically sound and rigorous (i.e., the science), yet free- thinking enough to have relevance for real-world applications (i.e., the art). Full story.
