ROGER
L. CONNER had a vision of what U.Va.’s
Medical Center grounds should be: an inviting
and comforting
zone for patients that epitomizes U.Va.’s
prestigious hospital and School of Medicine.
Conner,
the
buildings and grounds supervisor for the
Health
System
landscape and labor crews, put his green thumb
and imagination to work to transform the grounds
into a meticulous garden of splendor. For their
beautification efforts, Conner and
his crew came out smelling like a rose, this
year winning the top national prize in
their field, along with earning local recognition. Full

Many
of Carrie Heilman’s research ideas
come to her while shopping. “The problems that
people work on in marketing are ones that most
people can relate to in their everyday experiences,”
said Heilman, an assistant professor in U.Va.’s
McIntire School of Commerce. Her research approach:
one that is analytically sound
and
rigorous (i.e.,
the science), yet free- thinking enough to have
relevance for real-world applications (i.e.,
the art). Full
