A
MOVING TARGET is how Del. Mitchell Van Yahres,
D-57th (obscured), described the Charter
proposal as state lawmakers, along with U.Va.
President
John
T. Casteen III (far left), met
for U.Va.’s annual legislative
forum, held Friday. The legislators expressed
general optimism for the proposal, which
would diminish the state’s sway over University
operations. However, with so many shaded areas
surrounding Charter, the legislators could
not pinpoint a decision on whether or not to
lend their support. The 46-day “short” General
Assembly session opens tomorrow. Full
story.

There
is no question that the Supreme Court case of
Brown v. Board of Education was a pivotal moment
in American history, but not for the reasons
that many people believe. U.Va. law
professor Michael Klarman sheds a new light on
the history before and after Brown in his latest
work, “From Jim Crow to Civil Rights: The Supreme
Court and the Struggle for Racial Equality.”
The original Brown decision, signed by each Supreme
Court justice, and supporting
documents (right), — gifts to U.Va.’s Law School
from E. Barrett Prettyman
Jr. ’53 — are on display in
the Arthur Morris Law Library. Full
story.
