THE SPOTLIGHT WAS on Gov. Warner’s proposed tax plan and what they mean for higher education, along with discussion of the future growth of U.Va. during the University’s annual Legislative Forum held Friday. Three state delegates from local jurisdictions all agreed that U.Va. shouldn’t be forced into rapid growth, even as Virginia braces for an influx of college-age residents. Full story.

How many more e-mails about generic Viagra can one stand? Are you tired of having your e-mail box inundated with spam, otherwise known as unsolicited email? Welcome SpamAssassin. U.Va.’s Information, Technology and Communication department has added this software program to its Central Mail Server, which scans incoming e-mail for signs of spam. Potential spam then goes to a separate folder, where the customer can examine the messages at their convenience. Full story.

An architectural masterpiece in the making, The Mary and David Harrison Institute for American History, Literature and Culture and the Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library will open its doors this fall. The four-level, 72,700-square-foot project is unique in that it’s 80 percent underground. “It is the most beautiful building on Grounds, next to the Rotunda,” said Jeanne M. Hammer, coordinator of capital projects for the U.Va. Library. Full story.
