U.Va. Receives Grant to Support Alcohol Education Aimed at Members of Fraternities and Sororities

U.VA.’S CENTER FOR ALCOHOL AND SUBSTANCE EDUCATION has been awarded a $675,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. The three-year grant will fund programs designed to inform students about the behaviors and attitudes of their peers in relation to alcohol use. With the increased awareness, U.Va. hopes to reduce negative consequences that members of U.Va. fraternities and sororities experience due to drinking. Full story.

NCAA Conference Targets Prevention of Substance Abuse Among Athletes

Substance abuse among student-athletes is a major cause of concern among universities. Athletic trainers, coaches, student-athletes and administrators from 46 colleges and universities from NCAA-member institutions will convene for the 14th annual Athletic Prevention Programming and Leadership Education (APPLE) conference, sponsored by U.Va.’s Center for Alcohol and Substance Education. During the weekend-long conference at the Doubletree Hotel in Charlottesville, athletic departments will access their substance abuse prevention programs and develop ways to improve them. Alderman Library Begins New Process for Computer Use

Beginning Monday, patrons visiting U.Va.’s Alderman library will need to log in before using the public computer terminals. This is part of the overall effort, led by U.Va.’s Division of Information Technology and Communication, to ensure that the University’s computing network remains secure. U.Va. faculty, students and staff using the Alderman public terminals will need an “Eservices” password; visiting scholars and guests from the local community will be able to get a guest password from the Alderman service desk.
