Shirley MenakerJanuary 28, 2005 -- One of the University’s most influential female leaders, Shirley Lasch Menaker, who died Dec. 24, will be honored in a memorial service Feb. 1 at 2 p.m. in the University Chapel. It will be followed by a reception at the U.Va. Art Museum.

Known to be fair, tireless and tenacious, Menaker retired from U.Va. as associate provost for academic support and classroom management after an academic career spanning more than 35 years. Menaker’s responsibilities included supervision of the offices that support the University’s academic mission, such as the Registrar’s Office, the Women’s Center, the University Art Museum, the U.Va. Press, Summer Session and the Upward Bound program. She also was U.Va.’s liaison to the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia, working on matters such as space use, new degree programs and annual reviews.
