January 28, 2005 -- One of the University’s
most influential female leaders, Shirley Lasch Menaker,
who died Dec. 24,
will be
honored
in a memorial service Feb. 1 at 2 p.m. in the University
Chapel. It will be followed by a reception at the U.Va. Art
Museum.
Known
to be fair, tireless and tenacious, Menaker retired from
U.Va. as
associate provost for academic support and classroom management
after an academic career spanning more than 35 years. Menaker’s
responsibilities included supervision of the offices that
support the University’s academic mission, such as
the Registrar’s Office, the Women’s Center, the
University Art Museum, the U.Va. Press, Summer Session and
the Upward Bound program. She also was U.Va.’s liaison
to the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia,
working on matters such as space use, new degree programs
and annual
reviews.
