AS
THE NUMBER of students attending U.Va. continues
to grow, so does the demand for housing. Rental
housing is a thriving business in Charlottesville,
with more than 12,500 students seeking off-Grounds
housing each year. Student renters are significant
contributors to the economy, generating income
for property owners as well as bringing in tax
revenues for the city. Full

If
you’ve always wanted to attend medical school
but settled for the Discovery Channel or the novels
of Robin Cook, now is your opportunity to go for
free and without grades or tests — to U.Va.’s
Mini-Med School. The School of Medicine is offering
its seven-week program on Thursday evenings, 7-9
p.m., March 25 through May 6. The course, supported
by a grant from Pfizer, brings in some of the
Medical School’s most popular professors
each week to discuss different topics in medicine.

This
year marks the 50th anniversary of the historic
Brown v. the Board of Education case, which ended
separate-but-equal Jim Crow laws. The above photo
was taken in the first half of the 20th century
by amateur photographer and education reformer
Jackson Davis, one of nearly 6,000 depicting the
poor conditions of African-American schools in
the South and the need for improvement. Davis’
photos are now part of the U.Va.
Library’s Special Collections. February
marks the beginning of African-American History
Month. U.Va.’s Office of African-American
Affairs is sponsoring a wide array of events throughout
the month. Extended
calendar of events.
