U.Va. Study Shows Paid Leave for New  Parents a Rarity in Academia

PAID PARENTAL LEAVE remains an elite benefit at most higher education institutions, according to Steven Rhoads, professor of politics at U.Va. and principal investigator of a recent nationwide study of parental leave policies. Rhoads, along with project director Charmaine Yoest, found that in total, only 26 percent of institutions offer some type of parental leave extending beyond a six-week maternity leave. Full story.

Medicare Bill Has Gaps, Surprises, Massaro Says

The Medicare bill signed into law in December could be a potential regulatory and financial nightmare, said Dr. Thomas Massaro, chief of staff at U.Va.’s Health System, at a recent Law School lecture. The bill, designed to address the need for prescription medicine coverage for the elderly, has coverage gaps that could affect the majority of benefits users, said Massaro. Full story.
