The
beginnng of a new year is often the trigger
for many people to start reflecting on
their lives and how to improve them. But
does self-reflection do more harm than
good? “Too much analysis can confuse
people about how they really feel,” according
to U.Va. psychologist Timothy Wilson, who
found that there are severe limits to what
people can discover through self-reflection
as a result of a study he helped conduct
to see how people really felt about their
romantic partners. What people don’t
realize is that there is a way to improve
themselves and feel happier without giving
it a second thought. “The trick is
to go out of our way to be kind to others
without thinking too much about why we’re
doing it. As a bonus, our kindnesses will
make us happier,” Wilson said. Full
