Governor Honors Menaker as Top Scientist

Michael MenakerAPPARENTLY, THE TIMING WAS RIGHT for Commonwealth Professor of Biology Michael Menaker. One of the world’s leading experts in the field of biological timing, Menaker on Tuesday was announced as one of Virginia’s six Outstanding Scientists of 2003. “These recipients are at the cutting edge of their fields, from cancer cures to the protecting the Chesapeake Bay, and from transportation safety to particle physics,” said Gov. Mark R. Warner. “Their creativity, contributions, and dedication are aimed at making life - in Virginia and beyond - better for us all.” The General Assembly will recognize the winners next week, and the awards will be formally handed out April 1. Military Allows Reporters to Accompany Troops

The Pentagon has said it will allow reporters to accompany combat units in the next war. But will that access lead to better journalism? That is among the questions recently debated recently at the National Press Club in Washington, which hosted a conference jointly sponsored by the U.Va. Law School’s Center for National Security Law and Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Free Expression. Media and military representatives discussed the conflict between the media’s oversight role and the need to protect national security. Full story.
