U.Va. Offers Emergency Preparedness Advice in Wake of FBI Warning to Colleges and Universities

U.VA. IS RAMPING up its security and emergency preparedness plans in the wake of Wednesday’s FBI warnings that colleges and universities may be potential terrorism targets. While the University will continue with its normal activities, officials are urging people to be vigilant and take steps to prepare for emergencies. The nation is under a “code orange” terrorism alert, the second-highest stage of wariness. Full story.

Virginian’s Income Sets Record, But Not All Share the Wealth

U.Va.’s Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service has released its annual income report, and it provides a snapshot of Virginians’ wallets at the end of an economic boom. By studying tax2000 data, the center found that the state’s median income for couples was a record $56,520, just before the economy went sour after a six-year climb. The five highest-income localities were all in Northern Virginia, led by Loudoun County ($80,122), with the five lowest-income counties all in Southwest Virginia, bottomed by Lee County ($27,326). Project Offers International Opera Experience

Run over a mental checklist of things that U.Va. is known for, and chances are opera won’t make it. That is, unless you’ve had some contact with faculty member Louisa Panou-Takahashi, whose annual Operafestival di Roma offers students, young artists and faculty members a chance to take part in a professional opera production —in Italy, no less.
