Creating Rules for the Grid: Humphrey Works to Improve Security for Computer Users

FOR THE MOST PART, computers actually use only a small fraction of their capacity, leaving massive amounts of computer power untapped. That’s where computational grids come in. The grids allow hundreds of thousands of computers spread across local networks to merge into a single virtual computer, capable of handling extreme problems. U.Va. computer scientist Martin Humphrey is working to improve grid security for computer users. Full story.

Supreme Court Designed to Help Americans Make Democracy Work

Under the constitution, the key to making a democracy work is public participation. The Supreme Court’s job is to maintain a system of democracy, but it’s the people who must make it work, Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer said during the recent Fifth Annual Conference on Public Service and the Law at U.Va.’s Law School. Breyer urged audience members to support American democracy by becoming involved in public service. Full story.

Engineering School Launches E-Business Minor

Four out of the five top recruiters of U.Va. engineering students over the last 10 years are companies with a business background, such as brokerage firms and financial institutions. Offered for the first time this spring, a minor in Engineering Business introduces engineering students to business basics and gives them additional skills that could enhance their career potential.
