FOR
THE MOST PART, computers actually use only a small
fraction of their capacity, leaving massive amounts
of computer power untapped. That’s where
computational grids come in. The grids allow hundreds
of thousands of computers spread across local
networks to merge into a single virtual computer,
capable of handling extreme problems. U.Va. computer
scientist Martin Humphrey is working to improve

Under
the constitution, the key to making a democracy
work is public participation. The Supreme Court’s
job is to maintain a system of democracy, but
it’s the people who must make it work, Supreme
Court Justice Stephen Breyer said during the recent
Fifth Annual Conference on Public Service and
the Law at U.Va.’s Law School. Breyer urged
audience members to support American democracy
by becoming involved in public service.

with a business background, such as brokerage
firms and financial institutions. Offered for
