Research Yields Benefits to Mankind, Marketplace

RESEARCH AT U.VA. is the mother of invention. Last year alone, 17 faculty members were issued U.S. patents for inventions in various fields. Research creates jobs, innovative medical treatments and pharmaceuticals, generates new knowledge, drives high-tech inventions and enhances U.Va.’s teaching mission, said R. Ariel Gomez, vice president for research and graduate studies. Full story.

Health System Opens Cancer Center Addition

Cancer patients receiving chemotherapy at U.Va. will experience a more comfortable, soothing environment with next week’s opening of the Health System’s new infusion center. The center will increase infusion capacity by about one-third and offers patients and their families the choice of spending their time in private rooms or open, communal spaces. Full story.

U.Va. Institute Awarded Grant to Study Environmental Outcomes of Collaboration

Grazing land disputes, forest management plans and conflicts over fisheries management are a few of the complex environmental problems that communities face. U.Va.’s Institute for Environmental Negotiation has been awarded a $300,000 grant to study the processes and environmental outcomes of community-based collaboration. Full story.
