Curry School Working to Arm Teachers With New Tools for Classroom

THE NATIONAL REPUTATION of the Curry School of Education has helped the University land two major grants. The “Teachers for a New Era” program, jointly administered with the College of Arts & Sciences, will create an innovative approach to training teachers. A “Reading First” grant partners Curry with Virginia school districts to improve reading instruction.

University Museum Receives Works by Joseph Cornell

The University Art Museum is displaying 12 newly acquired works by the enigmatic 20th-century American artist Joseph Cornell. The acquisitions — four boxes and eight collages — join two other Cornell boxes previously acquired. “We are thrilled and deeply honored to accept these significant works into our collection,” said museum director Jill Hartz. “They will be enjoyed and studied by students and visitors for generations to come.” The new works will be on exhibit through June. Annual Virginia Governors Conference Highlights Term of Gerald Baliles

Gerald BalilesA political wag once described former Virginia Gov. Gerald Baliles as being “boldly cautious,” but those gathered last year at a conference examining his term — including Baliles himself — remembered him as a governor who knew how government worked and put that knowledge to use getting things done. The conference was part of a series of annual meetings to examine Virginia governorships. Full story.
