An Individual Off the Beaten Path, Steve Marrin’s Passion for Intelligence Reform Making Its Mark

FOR STEVE MARRIN, a stint at the CIA was like putting a round peg into a square hole. The agency’s one-size-fits-all approach to analysis didn’t match up to the expectations of this intellectual thinker bursting with ideas. These days, Marrin is following his desire to keep the country safe by analyzing the agency. The self-proclaimed “creative conceptualizer” has a lot to say and people are listening. Top Expert on Climate Change Slated to Speak on Grounds Tomorrow

Lonnie Thompson, professor of geological sciences at Ohio State University, will present U.Va.’s Department of Environmental Sciences Moore Lecture, titled “Rapid Climate Change in the Earth System: Present, Past, and Future,” Thursday in Clark Hall, Room 108, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Refreshments will be available at 3:30 p.m. A senior research scientist with the Byrd Polar Research Center, Thompson is one of the world’s authorities on the melting of glaciers and ice caps as a warning of rising global temperatures. Hot Off the Press: New Home for Va. Arts of the Book Center

Johanna Drucker, U.Va.’s Robertson Professor of Media Studies shows visitors to the Virginia Arts of the Book Center one of the printmaking presses during an open house that was part of the Virginia Festival of the Book. At least 60 people of all ages came by March 19 to watch demonstrations, she said, in the new location in the Frank Ix Building. U.Va. art professor Dean Dass (mouse-over for photo) is coordinating activity for an etching studio in the facility.
