Attic Contents Offer a Glimpse Into the Past Life of a World War I Nurse

LETTERS TO AND FROM France, a diary, a victory medal, a U.Va. pin, a nursing cap, a winter scarf — just a handful of over 100 artifacts depicting the life of a World War I nurse. Arlene Keeling (far left), director of U.Va.’s Center for Nursing Historical Inquiry, and Jennifer Casavant, a Ph.D. student in the nursing school, were on a hunt for the collection of the late Camilla Louise Wills, a U.Va. Nursing School graduate who had served in France during the war. One day last September, they found the treasure, tucked away in a dark attic corner in the home of Wills’ niece. Full story.

New Method Devised to Study Membrane Proteins

Proteins in the human body are essential in the growth and repair of tissue. Before now, little has been known about the proteins embedded in lipid membranes of cells, but scientists at U.Va.’s Health System have come up with a process for extracting and stabilizing the proteins long enough to be studied for structure and stability.
