U.VA.
STUDENTS CAN breathe a sigh of
relief when it comes time to make housing arrangements,
thanks to a
new policy announced
last week at the
Board
of
Visitors’ meeting. Implemented with this year’s
incoming class, first-year students will
be guaranteed University housing for their
second year, with the option
to renew. Until now, students have been under
pressure to sign leases for
off-Grounds housing a full year in advance,
before knowing what other options were available
to them. Full
story.

Diabetes
affects about 18 million people in the U.S.
and is the fifth-leading cause of death
by disease. The
National Institutes of Health has awarded U.Va.
Health System researcher Dr. Jerry Nadler a
grant for $1.3 million over four years to study
a gene potentially involved in causing damage
to the insulin-producing islet cells of the
pancreas, which results in diabetes. Full

The
National Institute of Aerospace will be getting
a home of its own next year, as ground was
broken last month to initiate the project.
The research institute is a partnership between
seven universities,
including U.Va., and the NASA Langley
Research Center in Hampton. The
institute, operating out of a small office
building for over a year, will be the first
tenant of a new office park in Hampton Roads. Full
story.
