New Plan Guarantees Students On-Grounds Housing

U.Va. studentsU.VA. STUDENTS CAN breathe a sigh of relief when it comes time to make housing arrangements, thanks to a new policy announced last week at the Board of Visitors’ meeting. Implemented with this year’s incoming class, first-year students will be guaranteed University housing for their second year, with the option to renew. Until now, students have been under pressure to sign leases for off-Grounds housing a full year in advance, before knowing what other options were available to them. Full story.

U.Va. Wins Grant to Study Gene Linked to Diabetes

Diabetes affects about 18 million people in the U.S. and is the fifth-leading cause of death by disease. The National Institutes of Health has awarded U.Va. Health System researcher Dr. Jerry Nadler a grant for $1.3 million over four years to study a gene potentially involved in causing damage to the insulin-producing islet cells of the pancreas, which results in diabetes. Aerospace Institute Becoming a Reality in Hampton

The National Institute of Aerospace will be getting a home of its own next year, as ground was broken last month to initiate the project. The research institute is a partnership between seven universities, including U.Va., and the NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton. The institute, operating out of a small office building for over a year, will be the first tenant of a new office park in Hampton Roads. Full story.
