Dr. Michael Scheld  

AIDS/HIV has delivered a deadly punch to Africa, where 1 million people are infected with the disease. In seven African countries, life expectancy has plummeted to below 40 years. But, the country of Uganda has fought back with AIDS prevention. Efforts have been significant, with the rate of infection dropping from around 30 percent in the 1990s down to 6 to 8 percent in 2003. Dr. Michael Scheld, U.Va.’s Mandell Professor of Internal Medicine, is part of an alliance working to strengthen Africa’s medical infrastructure in retaliation against this devastating epidemic. Edmundson, Wylie Among Winners of This Year’s Guggenheim Awards

Results of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation's 81st annual competition have been announced and two U.Va. faculty members, Mark Edmundson and William Wylie, are among this year’s winners.
Edmundson is the National Endowment for the Humanities Daniels
Family Distinguished Teaching Professor of English. Wylie is assistant professor of art. The full list of this year’s 186 fellows is online at www.gf.org.

Bowl Game Proceeds to Benefit Band, Graduate Research

U.Va.’s Athletics Department has given a share of the football MPC Computers Bowl proceeds to the Virginia Marching Band endowment, and U.Va.’s Faculty Senate — to the tune of $25,000 each. Full story.
