AIDS/HIV
has delivered a deadly punch to Africa,
where 1 million people are infected with
the disease. In seven African countries,
life expectancy has plummeted to below
40 years. But, the country of Uganda
has fought back with AIDS prevention.
Efforts have been significant, with the
rate of infection dropping from around
30
percent
in the 1990s
down to 6
to
8 percent
in 2003. Dr. Michael Scheld, U.Va.’s
Mandell Professor of Internal Medicine,
is part of an alliance working to strengthen
Africa’s medical infrastructure in retaliation
against this devastating epidemic. Full
