Blackburn Named Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor at U.Va.’s College at Wise

GILMER W. BLACKBURN, a historian with more than 30 years of experience in higher education, will become the next provost and senior vice chancellor at the University’s College at Wise, U.Va. President John T. Casteen III announced Tuesday. An accomplished scholar, Blackburn will hold professorships in both history and education. He will assume his duties on July 1. Full story.

U.Va. Gives Out First-Ever “Double ’Hoo” Research Awards to Students

Eight research projects investigating topics ranging from SUV advertising to archaeology in Africa and Britain to tungsten dearomatization reagents have earned 16 U.Va. students the Double ’Hoo Research Awards, presented for the first time at a recent ceremony. These awards allow graduate students to work together with undergraduates on research. The students will receive $5,000 per pair. “Our undergraduates see this as an opportunity to work with graduates in a mentoring relationship,” said Nicole F. Hurd, assistant dean of U.Va.’s Center for Undergraduate Excellence. Full story.

Bowen Urges the Expansion of Affirmative Action

When looking at the numbers for application and enrollment into elite institutions, there is a definitive gap between students from low-income families and those from high-income families. Higher education institutions need to do more — including the development of class-based affirmative action for the underprivileged, said William Bowen (above), educator and affirmative-action supporter, who delivered three talks at U.Va. earlier this month as part of the Thomas Jefferson Distinguished Lecture Series.
