Giving Voice to Trauma, and Listening Closely

MOST EVERYONE HAS gone through troubling times in their lives. Story and narrative can play an important part in recovering from a traumatic experience, says Rachel Saury, a professor in U.Va.’s Slavic Department. Along with her colleague John Alexander, Saury teaches a class on “Story and Healing.” A Native American spiritual healer, artist and teacher, Martin Prechtel (left) calls storytelling “cultural medicine.” Prechtel gave a presentation — arranged by Saury and Alexander — about the healing qualities of stories at U.Va. in March, in conjunction with the Virginia Festival of the Book. Stan Henderson, Longtime U.Va. Law Professor, to Retire

A favorite among students and peers, U.Va. law professor Stanley D. Henderson is retiring after 34 years of teaching. Henderson received the Virginia Alumni Association’s Distinguished Professor Award in 1983. He was the first recipient of the law school’s first Thomas F. Bergin Teaching Professorship from 1993-96, and in 1994, received the First Year Class Law Faculty Teaching Award. Full story.

Film Society Takes a Look Inward at Season’s Close

A celebration of the Charlottesville arts scene will bring the Virginia Festival Film Society’s 2003-04 season to a close. Events slated for Tuesday’s program include a short film by renowned filmmaker George Kuchar and an hour-long documentary by film festival director Richard Herskowitz on the U.Va. art museum exhibit, “Hindsight/Fore-site: Art for the New Millennium.” Full story.
