MOST
EVERYONE HAS gone through troubling times in
their lives. Story and narrative can play an
important part in recovering from a traumatic
experience,
says
Rachel Saury, a professor in U.Va.’s
Slavic Department. Along with her
colleague John
Alexander, Saury teaches a class on “Story
and Healing.”
A Native American spiritual
healer, artist and teacher, Martin Prechtel
(left) calls storytelling “cultural
medicine.” Prechtel gave a
presentation — arranged by Saury and
Alexander
— about the healing qualities of
stories at U.Va.
in March, in conjunction with the Virginia
Festival of the Book. Full
