Photo of Cassandra FraserTHE COURSE IS CALLED "Designing Matter," but it is a long, long way from being an esoteric engineering course. One of the University's initial "common course" offerings, the instructors come from several disciplines to address science-based issues, often with a humanities spin. The enrollment includes students from many different majors, including biology chemistry, art education, environmental sciences, English and anthropology. "Everybody — including the instructors and TAs — works outside their field," said course coordinator and chemistry professor Cassandra Fraser (left). Full story.

New Technique Helps Find Lesions in Lung

A new technique being pioneered by U.Va. Health System physicians offers hope for those at risk to develop lung cancer. The process allows doctors to identify and remove pre-cancerous and cancerous lesions before they cause problems, potentially leading to longer survival for patients. Full story.

Minister Gives Up Pulpit for Nursing

John Bradford Langdon was settled in. He had been the pastor of a Presbyterian church near Lexington for almost a decade; he was active in the community and in the churchís regional governing assembly. He even had a small cow-and-calf operation. But he felt a calling to expand his ministry, and ended up at the U.Va. School of Nursing. On May 16, he will start a new career at age 52. Full story.
