WAS 1982. Rebecca Arrington, 21, recently laid off,
was at home with two young children. Her marriage, she
says, was "in a recession." Her once-vivid
college dreams seemed far out of reach. She applied
for a job at U.Va., mostly in order to continue to receive
unemploymment benefits; she had been told that the school
would never call back. Flash forward two decades: Arrington,
now a 22-year employee of University Relations, is preparing
to walk down the Lawn with her daughter. Even she marvels
