Caitlin Banks drives for a goal
U.Va. Women's Lacrosse Team Routs Princeton for NCAA Championship
IT WAS THEIR TURN. One year after watching the Cavalier men's lacrosse team win an NCAA title, and 11 since capturing their last banner in 1993, the U.Va. women's lacrosse team routed previously undefeated Princeton on Sunday to win the 2004 national championship. Caitlin Banks (22, left) was joined by teammates Elizabeth Pinney, Nikki Lieb, Amy Appelt and tournament MVP Andrea Pfeiffer on the All-Tournament team. Full Story.

Long-Awaited State Budget Boosts Salaries, Base Operating Funds

It was months in the making, but the state's two-year budget, approved earlier this month by the Virginia General Assembly, contains good news for the University. Among its provisions: a 3 percent salary increase for faculty and staff, effective in time for Christmas, and a $7.5 million boost in the state's contribution to the University's base operating budget. Law Alumnus Howell Leads Delegates Through State Budgetary Showdown

William J. HowellU.Va. Law School alumnus William J. Howell, Speaker of Virginia's House of Delegates, knew he would have a battle on his hands even before the 2004 General Assembly convened. An anti-tax, conservative Republican, he held firm in his convictions, and still managed to avoid the possible governmental shutdown that might have been a train wreck for Virginia's economy.
