IT
WAS THEIR TURN. One year after watching the Cavalier
men's lacrosse team win an NCAA title, and 11 since
capturing their last banner in 1993, the U.Va. women's
lacrosse team routed previously undefeated Princeton
on Sunday to win the 2004 national championship.

It
was months in the making, but the state's two-year
budget, approved earlier this month by the Virginia
General Assembly, contains good news for the University.
Among its provisions: a 3 percent salary increase
for faculty and staff, effective in time for Christmas,
and a $7.5 million boost in the state's contribution
to the University's base operating budget. Full

Law School alumnus William J. Howell, Speaker
of Virginia's House of Delegates, knew he would
have a battle on his hands even before the 2004
General Assembly convened. An anti-tax, conservative
Republican, he held firm in his convictions, and
still managed to avoid the possible governmental
shutdown that might have been a train wreck for
