BOV Panel Backs Salary Supplements for Faculty, Staff

RotundaCONTINUING A FOUR-YEAR EFFORT to boost compensation for U.Va. faculty and staff, the Board of Visitors' Finance Committee has endorsed a $1.73 billion operating budget that includes $2.2 million for salary increases, supplementing the 3 percent raises the General Assembly approved in early May. Faculty will be eligible for a merit-based, 2 percent increase, while a $250,000 pool has been set aside for classified staff salary adjustments necessary for retention and market competitiveness. This is the second year of the program, intended to make University salaries competitive on a national scale. Full story.

Program Focuses on Environmental Solutions

Land-use questions are among the stickiest that localities face. Issues involving open-space conservation, smart growth, water quality, Superfund site remediation, and sustainable agriculture and forestry often drive wedges into a community. The Virginia Natural Resources Leadership Instititute — a joint offering of the University of Virginia, Virginia Tech and the Virginia Department of Forestry — offers a framework for addressing such thorny issues.
