In celebration of teaching: Top faculty describe their philosophy
 

THEIR ADMIRERS INVARIABLY describe the recipients of the 2004 University of Virginia Teaching Awards as demanding, caring and committed to students' learning. But how do they describe themselves? As part of the nomination process, the honored professors were asked to provide statements about their teaching philosophy, and those statements offer some insight into what makes for outstanding pedagogy. Techno-Savvy Students Want Meaning, Not Glitz

Information technology is no longer a primary selling point for prospective students, suggests one U.Va. alumnus who has returned to study business at the Darden School. As long as the school's infrastructure meets minimum standards — easy broadband access, preferably wireless — students will come. But using such technology to enhance their education once they are here could "expand [their] horizons academically, professionally, and business-wise," he suggest. Full story.

'Force for Change' Relinquishing Reins at E-School

The School of Engineering and Applied Sciences that dean Richard W. Miksad leaves at the end of August will be significantly different from the one he took over a decade ago: more focused on research, specifically in interdiscplinary fields; on a much firmer financial footing; and possessing a more diverse faculty.
