You Can Never Be Too Clean: U.Va.’s Kevin Lehmann’s Spectroscope Increases the Yield of Semiconductors
ALL IT TAKES IS one tiny drop of water or one speck of dust to wreak havoc on the production process of semiconductors. Ideally, the production areas should be clean, nice and dry, with water vapor levels below one part per billion. Using a technique called cavity ring-down spectroscopy, University of Virginia chemistry professor Kevin Lehmann (left) has created a spectroscope that enables semiconductor manufacturers to detect and measure a particular substance. Study Reveals Lag Time in Reporting Drug Recalls to Healthcare Professionals

The once popular painkiller Vioxx was recalled because of an increased risk of heart attack in patients who took the drug. Bextra, also known as valdecoxib, was also withdrawn several months later. Only two of 15 drug databases used by healthcare providers reported the recall of valdecoxib on the same day that the recall was announced, according to a study conducted by a team of physicians at the University of Virginia Health System and Tufts University School of Medicine. “As the prevalence of prescription medicines grows coupled with information that changes daily, it is very important that there be a coordinated warning and reference system for prescription awareness,” said Dr. Scott Strayer, assistant professor of family medicine at U.Va. and lead researcher for the study. John Paul Jones Arena Withstands Pressure of ‘Super Flush’

The University of Virginia’s soon-to-open John Paul Jones Arena was the scene May 31 of a “Super Flush” to simulate halftime at basketball games and intermission at special events. To determine if the water pressure can be maintained, almost 60 volunteers simultaneously flushed all 361 toilets every minute for 10 minutes. “The test was very successful,” according to Richard Laurance, arena project director. “We will tweak the pressure slightly so that we will get even flows throughout the arena. We’re happy with the results and we appreciate the participation of the personnel who helped out. This is one further test successfully completed so we can have occupancy later this summer,” Laurance added.
