New Study on Jet Lag Sheds Light on Why Biological Clock is Slow to Reset After Transmeridian Travel

SUFFERING FROM JET LAG and sleep disorders could one day be put to bed thanks to an eye-opening study that explains the inner workings of the body’s biological clock. Light schedule shifts of six hours cause two parts of the brain’s central timekeeper to fall out of synchrony. Researchers have identified neurotransmitter GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) as what ultimately brings the clock back into synch, according to co-investigator Gene D. Block, U.Va. professor of biology. The findings could lead to the development of medicines for possibly eliminating jet lag, in addition to treating shift workers. Full story.
