Board of Visitors Approves $1.97 Billion Budget

THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA’s 2006-2007 budget will grow by 6.7 percent to total $1.97 billion effective July 1, as approved by the Board of Visitors Finance Committee on May 16. Despite the General Assembly’s failure so far to pass a state budget, “I’m confident that the budget I’m bringing to you is sustainable regardless of what happens at the General Assembly,” said Leonard W. Sandridge (left), executive vice president and chief operating officer. The board also heard plans for a new diversity communications strategy that includes two new programs, as well as an update on the progress of the Capital Campaign thus far. Full story.

Generous Gift Launches Global Communicators Program at Comm School

The University of Virginia McIntire School of Commerce’s focus on building the global skills of its students has been sharpened thanks to a $2 million gift from late McIntire alumnus Henry Norwood Obear. The Global Communicators Program, of which the first elements were implemented in the 2006 spring semester, is designed to deepen student experiences in cross-cultural communication by allowing them to participate in intercontinental virtual teams, supporting study-abroad initiatives and enhancing coursework designed to help students effectively communicate with colleagues from different cultural backgrounds. U.Va.’s Reunions Weekend Offers More Bang With Fireworks Display, Increased Activities

A Saturday night fireworks display high above the Rotunda provided an exciting flourish to Reunions Weekend, held on June 2-4 at the University of Virginia. This year’s reunion brought over 3,000 alumni and guests back to the University, with one individual coming from as far away as Sydney, Australia. In addition to the first-time fireworks display, the enhanced Reunions program included numerous other academic and social activities over the course of the weekend. For more information, visit the Reunions Weekend Web site.
