U.Va. Sociologist W. Bradford Wilcox Studies The Impact Religion Has on Fatherhood

DESPITE THEIR PATRIARCHAL family structure, evangelical protestant men make some of the best husbands and fathers, according to a study by W. Bradford Wilcox, a U.Va. assistant professor of sociology. Wilcox wanted to know how family attitudes and practices of married men with children are influenced by religion. Wilcox’s findings are outlined in his new book, “Soft Patriarchs, New Men: How Christianity Shapes Fathers and Husbands.” Full story.

Playing it Safe During Water-Related Activities: Life-Saving Tips Offered

Summer is a time for fun — family vacations to the beach, trips to the pool, a boat ride. It can also be a time for tragedy. Drowning is the leading cause of death among children under 4 years old, happening often while the children are under supervision. In an effort to teach the public about the prevention of water accidents, U.Va.’s Children’s Medical Center is sponsoring Water Safety Awareness Day on Saturday. Full story.

LaVahn HohWhen one thinks of a circus, they probably think lions, tigers, clowns and trapeze artists. LaVahn Hoh thinks about so much more. Hoh’s first trip to the circus made such an impression on him that the U.Va. professor of drama teaches a course on circus history — the only accredited course of its kind in the world. Currently a fellow at U.Va.’s Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities, Hoh plans to share his passion for the circus with a new Web site titled “The Circus in America, 1793 to 1940,” which should go live this summer.
